Who is Anshi, and how old is she?
Anshi is the Empress Dowager and the reigning Emperor's mother. The clearest early-novel age statement is in Volume 3, Chapter 14: she is less than ten years older than him. An exact age should not be calculated by assuming she first gave birth as a teenager. Her family also has two layers: officially she is Jinshi's mother; biologically she is his paternal grandmother.
Who Is the Empress Dowager in The Apothecary Diaries?
Anshi belonged to the previous Emperor's court and became Empress Dowager when her son succeeded him. The title identifies her as the reigning ruler's mother. It is different from Empress, the title of the reigning ruler's wife.
This distinction matters when reading across volumes. In the early story, the Emperor has high-ranking consorts but no reigning Empress. At the end of Volume 4, Gyokuyou becomes Empress. Anshi remains Empress Dowager; Gyokuyou does not replace her in that role.
Anshi therefore sits at the junction of two generations. She is a survivor of the former court, the mother of the present ruler, and a participant in the family secret that shapes Jinshi's position.
How Old Is Anshi? What the Novel Actually Establishes
Volume 3, Chapter 14 gives an age difference, rather than a simple current-age profile. Maomao reflects that fewer than ten years separate Anshi and the Emperor. The same passage describes Anshi as physically immature when she gave birth and explains the need for surgery.
That makes a calculation based on a supposedly usual childbirth age of fourteen to sixteen unreliable. Historical averages are especially unhelpful here: the text is deliberately describing an extraordinary and abusive situation, not an ordinary marriage in a real Chinese dynasty.
The chapter also discusses Anshi's later pregnancy as she approached thirty. These are clues attached to different events, not permission to combine approximate dates into an exact birthday. For a character reference, the defensible answer is the stated age gap, with the volume attached.
Do Not Mix Jinshi's Real Age with His Cover Age
Jinshi creates another trap for a family timeline. In Volume 2, Chapter 14, his eunuch persona is twenty-four, while Gaoshun refers to the prince himself as nineteen. Those are two identities at the same point in the story, not two interchangeable birth dates.

Anshi, Ah-Duo and Jinshi: The Family Relationships

Anshi's Past and the Former Emperor
Volume 3 links Anshi's early pregnancy to the former Emperor's abuse of young girls. Her surgical scar is evidence of what surviving that court cost her. It should not become a romantic account of palace marriage or a claim that her experience was normal.
Her request for Maomao to investigate a supposed curse also gives her a voice in the story. She is asking about a past she has lived through, while Maomao must distinguish physical evidence from the fear and guilt attached to it. Reading Anshi only as an entry in Jinshi's family tree misses this part of her characterization.
Why the Two Pregnancies Matter
Anshi was pregnant by the former Emperor while Ah-Duo was pregnant by the future reigning Emperor. Their children's official positions were therefore different: one was an imperial brother, the other an imperial son. Changing which baby occupied which position changed the succession story without publicly changing either woman's role.
Ah-Duo's account in Volume 13, Chapter 14 confirms that she and Anshi planned the exchange together. This makes Anshi a participant in the concealment, rather than a mother who simply failed to notice that another child had replaced her own.
What Maomao Learns in Volume 13
Ah-Duo explicitly tells Maomao that Jinshi is her biological son. Maomao has already considered the possibility, but direct confirmation removes her ability to treat it as a private theory.
Jinshi is not the recipient of that confession. The chapter describes the intention that he continue living under his official identity without knowing the truth. Knowing who his parents are, knowing who helped conceal it, and knowing whether Jinshi himself has discovered it are separate questions.
How to Follow Anshi's Story Without Mixing the Timelines
- Attach age claims to a volume. A cover identity is not a birth record.
- Separate office from ancestry. Empress Dowager and Empress are different titles; official motherhood can conceal a different biological relationship.
- Keep the listener in view. Ah-Duo's confession to Maomao does not automatically give the same information to Jinshi or the court.

Is Anshi Jinshi's mother or grandmother?
Both descriptions occur for different reasons. She occupies the official role of his mother, but the baby swap makes her his biological paternal grandmother.
Did Anshi know about the baby swap?
Yes. Volume 13, Chapter 14 identifies Anshi and Ah-Duo as having planned it together.
Is Anshi the current Empress?

Anshi connects the harm of the former court to the choices made by the present one. Her age, official title and involvement in the exchange matter because each reveals a different part of that history. Keeping those facts distinct makes the family mystery clearer without replacing the novel's evidence with a neat but unsupported calculation.
