Spoiler Warning

This guide reveals the Shi clan arc through the end of light novel Volume 4, including Shisui's identity, the children's apparent deaths, and the Tamamo ending.

Is Shisui Loulan, and Does She Survive?

Yes: Shisui is Consort Loulan's identity as an ordinary court lady. After the fortress confrontation, Volume 4 closes with the survival reveal of a young woman calling herself Tamamo. The children she drugs also survive after treatment, but their rescue has lasting consequences.

Who Is the Bug-Loving Court Lady?

Shisui is the lively palace servant whose interest in insects brings her into Maomao and Xiaolan's circle. Loulan, meanwhile, appears as a distant high-ranking consort whose changing clothes and elaborate makeup make her face difficult to pin down.

They are the same person seen under very different social conditions. The court-lady identity lets Loulan move beyond the formal performance demanded of a consort. Her insect interest also has a place in the practical mysteries around her, not only in the story's visual imagery.

Is Her Friendship with Maomao Genuine?

There is real companionship in their time together, but Shisui also withholds information and involves Maomao in a dangerous plan. The later rescue depends on Maomao's medical skill. Neither describing Shisui as a harmless friend nor reducing every friendly gesture to manipulation captures that tension.

For the friendship itself, see why Shisui may never see Maomao again. This guide focuses on the identity and survival sequence.

How Shisui and Loulan Fit Together

Volume 4 brings the concealed identities into the open. Loulan is Shishou's daughter, placed in the Rear Palace as a high-ranking consort. Her connection to Suirei and her mother's household adds a family history that the palace persona obscures.

The Consort, the Servant and the Name

Loulan's formal appearance emphasizes the role her family expects her to play. Shisui's more expressive manner gives her room to act outside that role. This contrast supports an interpretation about constrained freedom; it does not mean that one identity is a separate person.

There is also a concrete history behind the name. In Volume 4, Chapter 15, Suirei confirms Maomao's deduction that Shisui had originally been her name before Shenmei took it away. The disguise therefore carries family meaning as well as practical usefulness.

The rebellion makes family membership itself dangerous. Collective punishment threatens the children as well as the adults responsible. This is the situation in which Shisui's choices must be understood.

Loulan's Choices Are Not Simply Her Mother's Orders

Shenmei's control over the household and Shishou's failure to oppose her help explain Loulan's constrained position. Yet Loulan eventually acts to separate the children's future from that of the condemned clan. The plan is coercive and medically dangerous even though its purpose is rescue.

What Happened to the Children?

Why Did Shisui Make the Children Appear Dead?

She gives them a drug intended to produce apparent death so they can escape the clan's punishment. In Volume 4, Chapter 18, Maomao finds their cold, unresponsive bodies and initially reacts as though they have been poisoned. Shisui says she mixed the medicine into a sweet drink.

This is not a misunderstanding caused by the earlier face-powder case. Maomao is confronting a real, dangerous act involving these particular children. Their survival depends on intervention, not on a harmless sleeping trick.

In the Volume 4 final chapter, all five children revive. Maomao works to restore their breathing and brings Suirei to help. The medicine was still incompletely tested, and there are aftereffects: Chou-u, the last to wake, loses memories and has mild paralysis on one side of his body.

The children receive new names. Chou-u is initially with Maomao in the pleasure district, while Ah-Duo takes responsibility for the surviving children. Their rescue is meaningful because they regain a future, but the text does not present it as cost-free.

Is This the Same as the Honey Incident?

No. The infant honey investigation is the earlier case involving Fengming and Ah-Duo's household. The Shi clan children are a different group in a different crisis. See the honey case and Ah-Duo's family secret for that separate sequence.

Is Shisui Alive at the End of Volume 4?

The ending presents her survival through the young woman who takes the name Tamamo. It follows an apparent death at the fortress, a failed search for Loulan's body, and a final scene at a port.

The Shooting, the Hairpin and the Port

  1. Volume 4, Chapter 21: Loulan is struck in the chest during the confrontation and falls backward from the fortress rooftop platform.
  2. The final chapter: the search of the snow below fails to recover Shisui's body. Maomao is left with hope and uncertainty.
  3. The port scene: a young woman trades an unusually fine but damaged hairpin for a jade cicada. Its flattened ornament bears an impact mark, a key clue linking this scene to the shooting.
  4. A new name: she calls herself Tamamo, expresses interest in going abroad and runs toward the harbor.

Read together, the damaged hairpin and Tamamo scene reveal a survival that the people at the fortress cannot confirm. The novel does not provide a step-by-step reconstruction of the entire escape, so the hairpin clue should not become an invented account of every movement after the fall.

There is no burned substitute body in this sequence. Nor does the port ending establish that she has permanently settled in a particular foreign country. It gives her a new identity and a possible direction.

What Do the Insect Motifs Mean?

Transformation as an Interpretation

The contrast between the constrained consort and the mobile, curious court lady invites a reading about transformation and freedom. That is an interpretation of the character's imagery, rather than a separate explanation of the escape mechanics.

The final object is specifically a jade cicada. Keeping that detail distinct from butterfly imagery makes the ending easier to follow: the cicada belongs to the actual port scene, while the broader transformation motif helps explain why leaving behind a name carries emotional weight.

What to Look for on a Reread

  • The difference between Loulan's formal presentation and Shisui's everyday interactions.
  • The history of Suirei's name and the skill needed to revive the children.
  • The gap between what Maomao knows at the fortress and what the reader sees at the port.

What Shisui Leaves Behind

Shisui's arc ends with the children alive and Loulan's court identity left behind. Tamamo's appearance gives the reader hope beyond Maomao's knowledge. The result is neither an uncomplicated happy ending nor a confirmed death: survival is achieved, but reunion, permanent safety and a settled future are not promised.
